Essential Oils for Skin Care: Mind-to-Body Formulation
Key Takeways
Mind-to-Body Skin Care Integrates Skin Biology with Sensory Neuroscience: Essential oils engage memory, emotional associations, and perception, making them uniquely suited to designing the complete skin care experience.
Skin Care Formulation Begins with Perception, Expectation, and Experience: The skin care experience begins before the first drop is applied. Expectation, memory, perception, and communication influence physiological responses before sensory information arrives from the product.
Botanical Skin Care Goes Beyond Biology: Great skin care formulation integrates essential oils, product storytelling, therapist communication, application rituals, biophilic design, and sensory neuroscience to create a personalized skin care experience.
You stand in front of the mirror preparing to apply your evening skin care serum. Reaching for the bottle, your thoughts turn to the scent, the feel of the serum, and the quiet satisfaction of knowing you’re about to nourish your skin. I describe this as, “The treatment begins before the treatment begins.”
Before the serum has left the bottle, your brain is processing the experience. This is known as top-down processing. Your expectations, memories, beliefs, attention, and perceptions help shape how your brain predicts and responds to what comes next. These cognitive processes influence the physiological responses that follow. Top-down processing can be intentionally incorporated into skin care formulation.
Essential oils in Top-Down Processing
Essential oils are uniquely suited to influence top-down processing because their aromas engage memory, perception, expectation, and emotional association while contributing to the biological activity of the formulation. This is integrated with the messages associated with the skin serum purchase. Marketing, verbal communication provided by the therapist, and familiarity with the essential oils being used all influence ongoing top-down processing.
When formulating skin care, I consider this essential oil integration and presentation. This works best when it’s a personalized formula. In this way, you are tapping into a person’s history, preferences, and emotional associations. In large part, your communication during the process is developing a strong top-down connection.
Formulating the Top-Down Process
I had a client who came to me, aged 42, with good skin condition showing some signs of stress. She also mentioned that by the end of the day her skin often looked tired and lacked the healthy vitality she normally experienced. She expressed herself in this way:
“I’ve been running nonstop for months. My days are full of meetings, decisions, and constant notifications. By the evening, I don’t necessarily feel stressed, I just feel like I’m always ‘on.’ I miss being outside. I love the smell of cedar after it rains and walking through evergreen forests. My evenings are the only time I have to myself, and I’d like my skin care routine to feel less like another task and more like a few quiet minutes that help me transition out of the day.”
I wanted to develop a biophilic formulation due to her mention of walks through the evergreen forest. Biophilia describes the innate human affinity for nature and living systems. Research into biophilia, particularly through the practice of forest bathing, has demonstrated measurable physiological and psychological benefits associated with time spent in natural environments. I consider all plant-based skin care to have this same biophilic, top-down influence.
Here’s how I formulated the essential oils for her skin, and as important, for her thought process that would become the top-down influence.
Atlas Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) – This is a wood base-note oil with good skin conditioning properties. It’s not a cedar in the way that would relate to the evergreen forest. That oil would be best satisfied using red or white cedar leaf, spruce, or pine. The oil name, cedarwood, will be enough to fulfill a mental forest feel.
Labdanum absolute (Cistus ladanifer) – At a very low percentage this resin oil will give a slight earthy scent that could be reminiscent of the forest after a rain shower. This would provide a grounding experience to help bring down the energy of an active business day. Vetiver could work as well.
Marjoram (Origanum majorana) – In keeping with the nature focus, I would present this related to the calming effect of walking through a field of herbal flowers. The oil has been shown to support parasympathetic activity, reinforcing those few quiet minutes to transition out of the day.
Neroli (Citrus aurantium, flowers) – This blissful floral is a burst of sunshine. Its floral and light scent gives a feeling of lightness and freedom from the burdens of everyday life.
The formula included a few more essential oils in a base of plant-based ingredients, further supporting the nature connection. The botanicals are described by their therapeutic skin conditioning benefits. This brings to mind the expectation that stimulates the physiology of a top-down process.
Communicating the Top-Down Process
All of the terminology and descriptions I used to explain my selection of these essential oils were communicated to the client. This information became associated with the formulation and stored as part of the experience. The aroma, the story, the explanation, and the expectation became integrated into the client’s ongoing top-down processing every time the serum was used.
This is only one aspect of a multi-layered, multi-pathway skin care experience that supports both healthy skin and the person experiencing it. Formulation is no longer limited to selecting ingredients for their biological activity. It also includes intentionally designing the experience through which those ingredients are perceived.
